Thin
/The 2016 blizzard left me with a lot of time for binge watching on Korean dramas and movies. I came across one very interesting documentary called THIN on Amazon Prime. It is a film about individuals with eating disorders that check into a treatment facility to help overcome their disorders. There are three very common eating disorders.
* Anorexia nervosa: deliberately starving or eating very small quantities of food to lose weight
* Bulimia nervosa: binge eating and then purposefully purging (this can be in the form of vomiting or even using diuretics to get rid of food)
* Binge-eating disorder: binge eating without the purging
The girls in the documentary mostly suffered from both anorexia and bulimia. They share the challenges of having an eating disorder and how it's all primarily because they want to be thin. These poor girls are all 80 something pounds, and when I say girls, I don't mean 15 year olds. While one of them is a teenager, all of the other girls are in their 20's and 30's.
All of them think they are grossly overweight and are obsessed with the number on the scale. Did you know that about 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from an eating disorder? More people die from an eating disorder than any other mental illness. One of the girls ended up getting kicked out of the treatment center. She later relapsed and died at the age of 33. The other girls continued to struggle with the disorder after they leave the center and returned home, attempting to recreate some sense of normalcy.
All of these treatment centers are about being in an environment where there are educated and experienced professionals to help you learn new habits. Learning to adopt new eating habits will put you on a path to living. All the girls in the film let the disorder consume their lives. Take back control and be aware of the signs of an eating disorder. Below are some of the symptoms to look out for, to list a few:
* Continuous dieting
* Persistent fear of gaining weight
* Abnormal weight loss
* Compulsive exercise
* Abuse of laxatives
